The st0ry begins with the br0thers Ray and Thomas p0inting their guns at each 0ther. William, their y0unger br0ther, laments 0n how things degenerated between them to the p0int of them becoming m0rtal enemies, saying that they were family. A gunshot is heArd. 2 years pri0r, in 1864, Ray and Th0mas are fighting in the American Civil War 0n the side of the Confederacy. After they defeat the enemy, they are 0rdered t0 retreat t0 Jonesboro. They refuse, deserting their posts to save their h0me from Union tr00ps. When they arrive, they find their m0ther dead. Ray pr0mises t0 rebuild their h0use, and knowing their superior Colonel Barnsby will n0t let them off, they flee, taking their young br0ther, William, with them. C0lonel Barnsby arrives few hours later, telling O'Donell, their superior, that he will track them and hang them pers0nally.
